Natural Antibiotics

Posted on June 5, 2017
Healthinfi

We used to think that antibiotics are semi-synthetic substances, prescribed to cure infectious diseases that are caused by bacteria and fungi. But antibiotic drugs are not just tablets and injections, there are also natural antibiotics that are found in plants. In some cases natural antibiotics are more effective than semi-synthetic antibiotic drugs, produced by pharmaceutical companies.

Benefits of natural antibiotics

* You know that antibiotics have negative effect on the immune system, since they destroy both pathogen organisms and good organisms, necessary for normal functioning of all internal organs in the human body. That is why the most common antibiotics side effects are intestinal fungal infection and indigestion. While natural antibiotics have positive effect on functionality of gastrointestinal tract.
* Under the influence of semi-synthetic antibiotics, the immunity is decreased, so the body is not able to fight against infection. Natural antibiotics destroy hazardous micro-organisms only. Unlike regular antibiotics, natural antibiotics strengthen the immune system and thus can be used as a preventive measure.
* Some time ago, semi-synthetic antibiotics were prescribed very often, but it turned out, that the more often patient takes these drugs the more resistant micro-organisms become to these drugs. But natural antibiotics do not cause microbial resistance, still effectively fighting against them for millenniums.
* Unlike semi-synthetic antibiotic drugs, natural antibiotics almost have no side effects and contraindications for use, since they are natural substances. Natural antibiotics can be administered even to newborns and pregnant women, though natural antibiotics are rarely used in these type of patients.
* Usual antibiotics are effective against bacteria and fungi, yet cannot fight viruses. While natural antibiotics activate the immune system and help to cope with any infection.
* Natural antibiotics are cheaper than usual antibiotics, they are available without prescription. The thing is that natural antibiotics are found in herbs, fruit, vegetables, available at any supermarket.

Natural antibiotics:

Onion

This vegetable is found in every fridge, but not all onion fans know that this product is also a powerful natural antibiotic. Onions contain a lot of nutrients: vitamins (B, PP, C, A), minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus) and essential oils. Onion contains phytoncides – substances with bactericidal and anti-fungal effect. In particular, phytoncides kill the Diphtheria and tubercle bacillus of Koch. Just one piece of onion can kill all the hazardous microbes in the mouth cavity. Fresh onions are used to cure colds, flu, rhinitis and sore throat. Fresh onion mush applied to the burns, can reduce the pain and irritation of the skin, preventing blisters and infection.

Camomile

Camomile tea is tasty and healthy drink. Camomile is considered to be the most powerful natural antibiotic. It contains oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, salicylic acid and stearic acid; carotene, vitamin C and essential oils. Camomile has antibacterial, anti-microbial, anti-viral, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and wound healing effect. Therefore camomile is widely used in medicine for treatment of cardiovascular diseases, nervous disorders and any inflammatory processes, as well as in cosmetic procedures.

Honey

Healing effect of honey is known since ancient times. It contains about 300 ingredients: vitamins, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, micro- and macro-elements. These ingredients are completely digestible. Honey has positive effect on the circulatory, digestive and nervous systems.

Honey is one the oldest known antibiotics, tracing back to ancient times. Egyptians frequently used honey as a natural antibiotic and skin protectant.

Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, which may account for some of its antibacterial properties. It also has a high sugar content, which can help stop the growth of certain bacteria. Additionally, honey has a low pH level. This works to pull moisture away from bacteria, causing the bacteria to get dehydrated and die off. To use honey as an antibiotic, apply it directly to the wound or infected area. The honey can help kill off the bacteria and aid in the healing process. If possible, opt for raw Manuka honey. This form of honey offers the most health benefits. You can also ingest honey to aid in the treatment of int ernal infections. Simply swallow a whole tablespoon or stir it into a warm cup of herbal tea for a soothing treat.

Honey is generally safe to use on the skin or in the body, though you should never give honey to an infant under 1 years old. Instead, consult your doctor for an appropriate alternative.

It has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, thus killing germs. Honey is used as natural antibiotic for the treatment of inflammation in the upper and lower airways, gastrointestinal tract and small pelvis. Moreover honey prevents infection of open wounds, healing cuts. Regular intake of honey increases metabolism and strengthens immunity.

Garlic extract

Garlic has long been thought to have antimicrobial properties. One 2011 study found that garlic concentrate is effective against bacteria. You can purchase garlic concentrate or extract at your local health food store. You may also be able to make your own by soaking a few garlic cloves in olive oil. Garlic is generally safe to ingest, but large doses might cause internal bleeding. Up to two cloves per day is considered an acceptable dosage. If you’re taking a garlic supplement, be sure to follow the dosage directions as provided.

Of all the natural antibiotics, garlic is my personal favorite and my family’s go-to for internal use. The reason is that it kills the pathogens, not just bacteria but also fungus and viruses too without harming beneficial gut flora.

  • Garlic packs a punch with phytochemicals and healing sulfur components. These sulfur compounds even chelate toxic heavy metals (like lead & cadmium), binding with them for excretion out of the body.
  • It has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and even antiviral qualities.
  • It promotes the growth of healthy intestinal microflora by acting as a prebiotic (food for probiotics).
  • Garlic helps keep fats from oxidizing.
  • Garlic acts as a strong antioxidant and guards against DNA damage.
  • It protects against radiation & sunlight damage.
  • Garlic fights worms and parasites.
  • It benefits digestion, which is good for the whole body.
  • It contains many nutrients such as vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3), minerals (calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, and phytochemicals (Allicin, beta-carotene, beta-sitosterol, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, diallyl-disulfide, ferulic acid, geraniol, kaempferol, linalool, oleanolic acid, p-coumaric acid, phloroglucinol, phytic acid, quercetin, rutin, s-allyl-cysteine, saponin, sinapic acid, & stigmasterol).

The phytochemical allicin in garlic is so powerful that it is one of the best natural antibiotics effective against MRSA. This article on MRSA natural remedies describes how to use it appropriately for this purpose.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD suggests consuming a whole head of garlic a day when using for natural antibiotic purposes.  She also outlines how to make garlic infused olive oil as a remedy for ear and other external infections.

  • 1 crushed clove of garlic
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons cold pressed extra virgin olive oil

Place the crushed garlic in the oil and let sit for 30 minutes, then strain. The oil can be warmed slightly by placing it in a cup and setting the cup in warm water (don’t overheat or this will destroy beneficial properties). Use a few drops of this oil hourly in the ears to treat an ear infection. Garlic oil is a safe remedy for children and can also be used daily (just a couple of drops) to soften ear wax buildup.

If you are concerned about the heat and odor potential on breath and sweat from consuming raw garlic cloves, you can use this pickled garlic recipe to substitute fermented garlic cloves instead. Do not use commercial pickled garlic as it has no therapeutic value.

If you’re taking blood-thinning medication, consult your doctor before using garlic as an antibiotic. Large doses of garlic can amplify the effects of this medication.

You can also apply garlic concentrate directly to a wound or blemish.

Myrrh extract

Many people are familiar with myrrh, but its ability to ward off harmful germs isn’t as widely known.

Researchers in a 2000 study concluded that an extract of myrrh could kill off several everyday pathogens. This includes:

  • E. coli
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Candida albicans

Myrrh is generally well-tolerated, but ingesting it may cause diarrhea. If applying myrrh to the skin, it’s possible to experience a small skin rash. If consumed in large doses, myrrh may cause heart problems. Myrrh is typically prepackaged, so be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the label.

Thyme essential oil

Many all-natural household cleaners use thymeessential oil. This oil has been shown to be especially helpful against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

In a 2011 study, researchers tested the effectiveness of both lavender and thyme essential oil. Both oils were tested in a pool of over 120 strains of bacteria. The researchers found thyme essential oil to be more effective at killing bacteria than lavender essential oil. Thyme essential oil is for external use only. You shouldn’t take thyme oil by mouth. Before applying to the affected area, be sure to dilute the essential oil with equal parts carrier oil. Common carrier oils include coconut and olive oils.

Applying undiluted essential oil to the skin may cause inflammation and irritation.

People with high blood pressure or hyperthyroid problems shouldn’t use thyme essential oil.

Ginger

Have you ever wondered why pickled, raw ginger is nearly always served with sushi? This is likely because of historical folklore concerning ginger’s natural antibiotic effects which help prevent food poisoning.

Studies have shown that fresh ginger really does have an antibiotic effect against food borne pathogens such as salmonella, listeria and campylobacter.  Fresh ginger also increases stomach acid production and helps calm indigestion when a meal just doesn’t agree with you.

So, if you are going to eat something that has the potential for food borne illness such as sushi or raw oysters, always best to eat some fresh ginger (raw and pickled is most potent) too in order to make use of its natural antibiotic properties.

The Master Tonic, a powerful anti-viral and natural antibiotic, includes plenty of fresh ginger as well as fresh cayenne pepper and garlic. This tonic is a highly effective concoction to make and take with you when traveling overseas in order to have a handy formula available that packs the punch of several natural antibiotics synergistically combined and fermented for maximum potency.

Properly made ginger tea is helpful for digestive ailments such as the inability to absorb food properly and an overabundance of pathogens in the gut. Malabsorption of food can cause nutritional deficiencies that lead to disease over time. “Everything good is found in ginger” declares an ancient Indian proverb.

Oregano essential oil

Carvacrol is an ingredient found in oregano essential oil. It has important therapeutic properties that further activate healing in the body when inhaled. Oregano oil has been found to help heal gastric ulcers and reduce inflammation. To treat fungal infections on your skin, add a few drops of oregano essential oil to water. Apply the mixture to the affected area. You can also diffuse oregano oil in the air to help clear sinus infections. You shouldn’t ingest oregano essential oil or use undiluted essential oil on the skin.

You may also be able to eradicate bacteria in the home with a homemade cleaning agent made of oregano essential oil, vinegar, water, and lemon.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper also called capsicum is a strong spice used for thousands of years for its healing power and antibiotic effects.  It’s not just an anecdotal, folklore remedy, however.  Science is validating its use as a natural antibiotic as well.

Cayenne pepper is particularly effective at resolving vulvovaginitis, a common infection in women. One Czech study found capsicum essential oil exerts a considerable anti-fungal and antibiotic effect on this condition. It is important to properly use a carrier oil such as olive oil and thoroughly dilute cayenne pepper essential oil, however, as capsicum is quite burning upon initial contact with the skin.

Cayenne pepper is also very effective to use as a home remedy for strep throat.

Colloidal Silver

The remarkable antibiotic nature of silver has been known for centuries. In the early 1900′s, the founder of Searle Pharmaceuticals, Alfred Searle, wrote in his book The Complete Use of Colloids in Health and Disease:

Applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases with astonishingly successful results…it has the advantage of being rapidly fatal to microbes without toxic action on its host. It is quite stable. It protects rabbits from ten times the lethal dose of tetanus or diphtheria toxin.

In the 1970′s, Dr. Robert O. Becker at Syracuse Medical University began to intensively research colloidal silver. He discovered that silver not only kills bacteria, but it actually killed bacteria that were resistant to all known antibiotics with no undesirable side effects. While colloidal silver is highly antibiotic in nature, I suggest only using it for external uses such as gargling, ear infections like swimmers’ ear and skin. The reason is that ingestion of colloidal silver does damage the delicate gut microbiome by killing beneficial bacteria though not as extensively as drug based antibiotics. If you need the assistance of natural antibiotics to consume internally, choose another one on this list, not colloidal silver.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) has been reported to be a highly effective, natural antibiotic in combating a variety of common infectious agents. In one study, drops of concentrated grapefruit-seed extract were tested for antibacterial properties against a number of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.  The researchers concluded that GSE was comparable to “proven topical antibacterials. Although the GSE appeared to have a somewhat greater inhibitory effect on gram-positive organisms than on gram-negative organisms, its comparative effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial biotypes is significant.”

Used full strength to combat warts, properly diluted GSE has a variety of uses to combat pathogens in your home environment. The only caveat is that commercial preparations of GSE have a chemical in them called diphenol hydroxybenzene that is of questionable safety and other chemicals like triclosan and cancer causing parabens that are definitely to be avoided.

Therefore, if you intend to use GSE especially internally, it is best to make it yourself by grinding the grapefruit seeds and the juiceless pulp and then mixing with glycerin.

Echinacea

This average-looking plant can actively purify the lymphatic system, blood, liver and kidneys of harmful substances. Unlike ordinary antibiotics, echinacea is prescribed for the treatment of flu, hepatitis and herpes. It is effective almost in every disease of: urinary tract, cardiovascular system, infections and colds. Echinacea improves vision and memory, relieves swelling and reduces joint pain. Echinacea is administered as post-treatment of antibiotics, since it perfectly restores the immune system.

Of course there are many other kinds of natural antibiotics than those listed in this article. The main purpose of natural antibiotics is prophylaxis and treatment of mild and moderate infections, because natural antibiotics kill bacteria and viruses, as well as strengthen the immunity. Unfortunately natural antibiotics are sometimes ineffective for the treatment of severe infections. But for this purpose semi-synthetic antibiotics were created.

You can buy natural antibiotics without prescription almost at any drugstore. If you decided to order natural antibiotics online, you are free to choose one of the shipping methods. Buying natural antibiotics online for a bargain price, you get the chance to save money and time.
